Very good news from the montane sector of PNKB and a result for the dedicated park staff - among the most courageous conservationists in the world - but the last sentence mentions a Grauer's population estimate of 4,000, which must be seen in the context of the 1996 estimate of 17,000 - a dramatic decline due to coltan, gold and tin mining by armed militias in the lowland sector of the park and surrounding forests - miners are dependent on bushmeat (of all large mammals - elephants, chimpanzees, buffalo, antelope as well as gorillas). Despite the dangers, park staff are beginning to regain control of some of these areas and the big question is, 'how many animals survive there?'
