Thanks for the info. Would be nice also if you would post the links to Google Maps so people who want to check for themselves can just click instead of having to zoom in to your screenshots and then type in the coordinates in Google Maps manually.

hi does anyone know of other places around the world with such stark contrasts ? also what other regions in the world have high deforestation rates?

Actually the forest in Kalimantan bordering Sarawak is no better. The logging road ended on the border is extended by light trail to haul log from Indonesia. That's why although it said that 90% of Sarawak is deforested, they still sell timber.

Very interesting. I arrived in Borneo today after years of dreaming of coming here. Looking out the plane window and the palm plantations and bare land land brought tears to my eyes. To Mark, who commented above, the only other place I have seen such a difference between borders on google maps is the island of Haiti/Domenican Republic.
