If anyone has been taking notes His Holiness Dalai Lama has always been a staunch advocate for the enviroment.
The wiki leaks just reinforce what most of us have known for the last few decades.
As for the legacy of His Holiness he would be the first to say he could care less.

Yes, Nicholas Kozloff has not done enough research this time before lambasting the Dalai Lama. One can see the Buddhist declaration on Climate Change on http://www.ecobuddhism.org/bcp/all_content/buddhist_declaration/ which was first signed by His Holiness. There is also a short essay by HH on the website on the Alliance of Religions and Conservation regarding biodiversity conservation http://www.arcworld.org/faiths.asp?pageID=64.

It was helpful of Kozloff to suggest specifics on how the HH can maximise his impact on climate action, but it was not useful to go all emotional without checking up clearly first. This instead puzzles all who are familiar with the Dalai Lama's stance all along, and puts Kozloff's sensibilities in question as a regular writer for Mongabay.
