These people are nuts, sadly. The earth continues to be raped right before our eyes.
I'm dismayed but certainly not surprised at this news. What a crooked government. Sarawak is an anti-environmental state. It has done a very poor job of balancing protection of natural resources with economic development.
For one thing, its remaining rainforests are woefully underpotected, even compared with Brunei, Sabah, Kalimantan and peninsular Malaysia.
While Sarawak likes to claim that over half of its area is still forested, the truth is the majority of that is degraded and overlooged. Go to Google Maps/Earth and zoom in on the interior of Sarawak. Upon first glance, you will see what looks like many rivers but a closer look reveals countless logging roads.
Then, there are plans to build 12 big dams which will drown out a lot of the remaining jungle.
Oil palm and tree plantations need no further comment, being the main catalysts of the wholesale destruction of the most biologically significant areas of the planet.
