Important commentary, thanks Mongabay. I suspect it may also be revealed in the near future that a key and shadowy component of Alan Oxley and his PR firm's strategy could be to support "astroturf" organizations in Europe and the US, modeled after WorldGrowth, to do their dirty work. They are shouting about "collusion" between enviros and the paper industry to block paper from China and Indonesia from entering Europe and the US, and how they are impeding the free market and hurting consumers. And they are not being completely forthcoming about the source of their sudden interest/focus in the paper trade, where their funding comes from, and who their associations are.

For example, today a new group in the United States called the Consumers Alliance for Global Prosperity launched a new website and report called Pulp Wars: Empires of Collusion, which appears to be an obvious regurgitation of APP and Alan Oxley's messaging, though the group's leader emphatically denies such association.

Until the forces behind this effort are revealed, readers can make there own judgement and see if this passes the "sniff test". Perhaps Mongabay can look into this next.

Joshua Martin

Joshua, the simple fact is there IS a collusion between enviros and paper companies to create ever increasing protectionist policies and stifle trade at the cost of consumers. The Pulps Wars report is quite illuminating. Have you read it? You should www.pulpwars.com.

Roger Eps

Roger, don't you think it is a little hypocritical that an Asian logging company is funding a front group (CAGP) in the United States to attack American companies as "unAmerican"? Seems like the most unAmerican approach of all.

In this context, I'd welcome everyone to read this report.

T.D.K.

Roger,

Please clarify:

Are you inferring that there is currently no problem with deforestation and loss of biodiversity in Asian nations and that green groups are simply making the problem up?

Or are you saying that there is a real problem with deforestation and loss of biodiversity, but in your opinion it doesn't matter, because fueling the human economy is the number 1 priority?

Collusion or not, the forests of Asia are being decimated.

Jon
