Without a doubt, a Mockus Presidency would certainly be fascinating simply to see whether he can provide the kind of injection of morality that Colombian politics so badly needs. Doing two terms of a Mayor of a major Latin American city without any significant corruption scandals is no mean feat, and the fact that he is not tainted by connections to political party apparatuses, or interest groups can certainly be applauded. You may also have mentioned the importance of his other backers, Lucho Garzón and Sergio Fajardo, both of them similarly successful Mayors of Bogotá and Medellin respectively.

At the same time, I think it is clear that Mockus will maintain the predominant economic model in Colombia, and that means a likely perpetuation of inequality. I´m not sure how committed he is to ensuring that health care does not remain a privatised, two tier system (as it currently) is, and personally, I believe that Gustavo Petro, the Polo Democratico candidate, might have much more to offer on these issues. I also don´t think environmentalists should get their hopes up. As far as I am aware, Mockus´s pronouncements on the environment don´t extent beyond a moral judgement of illegal coca growers who cut down the rainforest, a serious issue but by no means the most serious environmental issue facing Colombia.

I do agree that Mockus is in theory the best candidate to be the next president of Colombia. I said "in theory" because he lacks experience in political matters that even Noemi Sanin (Conservative Party candidate) has. For example exterior (foreign) politics. Our relationship with the neighbor countries happens to be in one of the most critical stages. Mockus might educate Colombian people, but it would be quite impossible to educate Hugo Chavez and Rafael Correa, which are always playing the deaf, dumb and blind with the FARC hiding in their territories. I think Mockus would be the perfect president for Colombia in 4 years. For the upcoming period I would prefer someone like German Vargas Lleras or Juan Manuel Santos to continue diminishing the guerrilla problem.
