Here is what the Ipsos/McClatchy poll said on Dec. 10th:

"Less than Half of Americans Blame Global Warming on Human Activity; Over One Quarter Do Not Think Global Warming Is Happening at All."

Here is the link from their own website.

The poll this article talks about.

Ipsos/McClatchy Poll
PROJECT #81-4621-23
NOTE: all results shown are percentages unless otherwise labeled.
These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted December 3 - 6, 2009. For the survey, a nationally representative, randomly selected sample of exactly 1,120 adults aged 18 and older across the United States was interviewed by Ipsos. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate within 2.93 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult population in the U.S. been polled. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error. These data were weighted to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the actual U.S. population according to U.S. Census figures. Respondents had the option to be interviewed in English or Spanish.
CLIMATE CHANGE
1.
You may have heard about the idea that the world's temperature may have been going up slowly over the past 100 years. What is your personal opinion on this? Do you think this has probably been happening, or do you think it probably has not been happening?"

Do you believe that the earth is getting warmer [ROTATE] mostly because of human activity such as burning fossil fuels, OR, mostly because of natural patterns in the earth's environment?
Mostly because of human activity.......

There's a proposed system called 'cap and trade.' that some say would lower the pollution levels that lead to global warming. With Cap and Trade, The government would issue permits limiting the amount of greenhouse gases companies can put out. Companies that did not use all their permits could sell them to other companies. The idea is that many companies would find ways to put out less greenhouse gases, because that would be cheaper than buying permits. Would you support or oppose this system?

What if a cap and trade program significantly lowered greenhouse gases but raised your monthly electrical bill by 10 dollars a month? In that case would you support or oppose it?

Those "polls" should have asked questions based on reality. Both questions were based on a $10 addition to electric bills PLUS the promise of MILLIONS of new jobs. But raise the amount a mere $15, to a whopping $25, and the support goes down to 43% (until you tack on MILLIONS of new jobs, then it goes back up a bit.

But what if they had said, "If, under the proposed cap and tax trade, your “electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket”, would you support it?"

Not my words - President Obama's words. He's the only one who has the courage to speak the outright truth. Under his version, which is the only one based in reality, guesstimate to me the numbers then. Any takers?

Here's a meaningful stat for you:

"More than 95%, the vast majority of Americans, favor having bucketloads of pig vomit dumped on their heads."

Of course, the poll would then have to read: "Would you favor having bucketloads of pig vomit dumped on your head in exchange for ten million dollars?"

Hey, everyone has their price.

Steven Douglas

Steven, that's not what the poll said.

However, the results are misleading. A majority of Americans in this poll don't believe that climate change is the result of man's activities. As I read it, 70% of 1120 (784) believe that climate change is occurring. Of this 784, 61% believe climate change is manmade (478). Thus 478/1120 = 43% of total respondents believe that climate change is the result of human activities. Of course a climate change poll among Americans doesn't say much about the science of climate change, which is probably best left to people who actually study climate: scientists.

I could be paddling a rowboat down Market Street in San Francisco after the poles have melted, and there will still be conservative fanatics who deny that humans are responsible for Global Warming or that it is even real. I invite you to my web-pages devoted to raising awareness on this urgent issue: http://pltcldscsn.blogspot.com/2009/12/conservatives-still-deny-global-warming.html
