"Bagua, Peru (June 6, 2009) – In the early morning hours on Friday, Peruvian Special Forces staged a violent raid on a group of indigenous people at a peaceful blockade on a road outside of Bagua in a remote area of the northern Peruvian Amazon resulting in 25 civilians confirmed dead and more than 150 injured. Over 600 police attacked several thousand unarmed Awajun and Wambis indigenous peoples including many women and children and forcibly dispersed them using tear gas and live ammunition." (Amazonwatch.org).

Thousands of acres of Rain Forest will be destroyed if WE the citizens of the world don’t do anything to stop it. By supporting the Indigenous people of Peru, who are the guardians of the Rain Forest, we also show our planet and our future generations that we care.

Let’s give our support and SHOW OUR PLANET and our future generations how much we care by coming out on FRIDAY JUNE 12 to the Peruvian Consulate at 11AM and demonstrate against oil extraction and mining in the Rain Forest of Peru.

Meet us at THE PERUVIAN CONSULATE Corner of Wilshire and Normandie in Los Angeles.

This is not just about PERU it is about the world and the planet, a few hours of your time can make a difference in the world!!!

Land or Death

The recent clashes in the Peruvian Amazon are because indigenous people have been seeking to repeal several decrees which infringe with their own territorial rights. These decrees were enacted by the Executive last year to fit in with private investment policies within the Free Trade Agreement signed with the U. S. The most contentious decree is decree 1090, known as the Flora and Fauna law. Decree 1090 allows land to be sold if it is determined to be of ‘national interest’. The Executive approved these decrees without consulting with the leaders of indigenous communities (an obligation under the International Labor Organization Convention, concerning Indigenous and Tribal Peoples in Independent countries, to which Peru is a signatory).

Indigenous people fear the loss of their land, mainly because most of them lack of land titles. The Garcia administration did not do good job handling the recent clash in Bagua. It is still unkonwn how many indigenous people died.
