I just read an article on the science pages of the belgian magazine "knack" that they found a new population of a few hundred golden frogs in Panama.
This magazine was dated april 2008.
That is true and we still have many here in el valle. Many are being looked after by some fine folks here that have been tyring to learn more about them, while being housed at one of the hotels. I have also seen them in the wild. So I guess they are NOT EXTINCT, of course by saying that maybe they got better ratings.
so they aren't extinct!?
BBC jumped the gun on claiming they were extinct.
But the species isn't doing well in the wild so captive care and breeding is key to their future. The good news is Panamanian golden frog is a well-known and charismatic species that is widely kept in captivity. Most other endangered frog species aren't so fortunate.
The fungal disease that is sweeping through Panama has now jumped the canal, and experts are worried that at least 30 other species may meet the same fate as Panamanian Golden frogs, as a result they are setting up captive assurance colonies for several species. http://amphibianrescue.org
